Things we "hope" to do in Alaska: (let us know if something catches your eye... we will try to hold out for anyone who shows interest in visiting and joining us for those activities.)
We have already been down to Denali National Park, but it is a quick (45 minute trip to park entrance) that we will definitely do several times. We hope to camp there once or twice and potentially take the bus all the way in. In a private vehicle you can drive a little ways in and see a shot of Mt Denali on a clear day, but to see more wildlife and get the best view of Denali, you have to take a bus. The bus ride is about 10 hours roundtrip and costs about $50 per person. So that's a little info on that. (FYI: If you fly into Fairbanks, you have the likelihood of getting some great shots of Denali on the 1.5 hour trip down to our house too.)
Another cool option we have discovered is the train that runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks. I am sure you would see some beautiful country and there is a stop on the train that is about 45 minutes from our house so you could ride the train and we could pick you up there after your trip. I think it is about 8 hours from Anchorage and it costs about $150-$200 per person so it is a little spendy, but my guess is you would get to see a lot of Alaska. You could also ride it down our direction from Fairbanks if you flew into there, but it may not be quite as scenic. The potential of flying into Anchorage and taking the train from there would hold the option of doing fun things around that area before you head this way as well, because there is A LOT to do around the Anchorage-Seward area.
We hope to hike and camp some in that area too, so we will probably make a couple trips down.
There is also good fishing in Soldotna and Sitka that we hope to check out.
We want to visit one of the dog mushing kennels in our area too. They will take you on "sled" rides in the summer with wheels on the cart, instead of tracks, so we thought that might be fun. If nothing else, I just want to play with the little husky puppies.
We also hope to do a wildlife day cruise out of the Kenai area. They say you typically see whales, seals, puffins, bears, moose, etc plus glaciers. We have heard of many, many cruise options, so we'll have to check into all of them a little more. I think they run around $150 per person.
There are several things to do around the Anderson area too, like canoe out on the lake over on base or go hunting and fishing there.
I want to do all of those!! I wish I could come. Have fun!
