A Friday for Thought

Usually Fridays are a day of excitement, where you let your brain unwind and look forward to the weekend. However, this particular Friday I have found myself in thought, with a song frequently making rounds in my head. Here are the lyrics...

Savior I come
Quiet my soul, Remember
Redemption's hill
Where Your blood was spilled
For my ransom

Everything I once held dear
I count it all as lost

Chorus:
Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Oh Lead me, lead me to the cross

You were as I
Tempted and trialed
You were
The word became flesh
Bore my sin and death
Now you're risen

Everything I once held dear
I count it all as loss

Chorus
Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Oh Lead me, lead me to the cross

Bridge:
To your heart
To your heart
To your heart
Lead me to your heart

The cross is humbling, freeing, overwhelming, and drawing. It calls us to thankfulness for the freedom from sin that Christ offered through the cross, but in the same breath, Christ says we are to have our own cross. We are to die to self and all this world offers so that He may be glorified in our lives. It's one of those profound paradoxes of the faith. I want to remember the cross, and what it means, and the grace offered to me in the bearing of my sin and death. It is not by works that I can gain life. Not by dying on my cross can I gain life. The gift (the life and blood of the spotless Lamb) was already poured out. It was such a gift at such a cost. All I can do is live thankful and surrendered. He indicated He didn't always want to walk that road to Calvary, just as I often don't want to count the cost, and walk the road to my cross, but for love, He was willing. With great dependence upon the Father, He gave it all. He crafted the road that leads us to the cross. And I am thankful. Hosanna!
